Banned Book Week

A celebration of our freedom to read

St. Helens Public Library Board Book Club

Get into the Spirit of Halloweentown

Join us for the St. Helens Library Board Book Club Kick-Off!

Our new book club will meet quarterly (subject to change as we get established).  It is open to the public and all are welcome.  Rather than having everyone read the same book, we will each read a book of our choosing that follows a THEME.  We'll all have a chance to share our thoughts and book/author recommendations during an informal conversation.  Light snacks and beverages will be available for all to enjoy.

Friends of the St. Helens Public Library fall booksale

Artist Talk: Linda Sprau

November Artist Talk and Show with Linda Sprau

Linda, a member of the Columbia Arts Guild, began painting after retiring in 2014 after a 42-year railroad career.  She credits the Guild for her “jumping into the local art scene.”

Sprau describes her art as “An exploration into my desire to recreate scenes and subjects in which I find beauty.”

Altered Books Demonstration

What is an altered book and how do you create one? Come find out during this workshop with local artists Luanne Ripley Kreutzer, Chris Vietmeier, and Barbara Weaving Lines. Altered books bring together a variety of mixed media and paper crafting techniques including collage, journaling, rubber stamping, embellishing, and scrapbooking. The creative possibilities are endless, and can go where your imagination takes you.

Civics for Adults – Misinformation, Fake News and Political Propaganda

We are overwhelmed with messages from politicians, news sources and other me-dia. Learn to distinguish truth from fiction using critical thinking strategies. The work-shop uses real world examples of political ads, news headlines, logical fallacies, graphs / charts, the effect of word choice in messaging, statistical data and other types of information in a “what do you see here? / what is missing?” type of format.

The last part is about finding accurate information. The goal is to help people become their own “factchecker”.
