Participants Sought for Seventh Annual Trash Can Painting Competition
Tuesday, February 21, 2017 - 6:00pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 6, 2017
St. Helens, Ore. – The St. Helens Arts & Cultural Commission (ACC) will host its seventh annual Trash Can Painting Competition on Tuesday, July 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Columbia View Park. Three prizes of $150 will be awarded the day of the event for the can with the most artistic merit, best park theme, and people’s choice.
Space is limited. Pre-registration for the competition is required by Tuesday, June 27, at 4:30 p.m. Applications are available to download on the ACC’s website (www.ci.st-helens.or.us/bc-acc). Printed applications may be picked up at the St. Helens City Hall Water Department, 275 Strand Street, St. Helens.
On July 4, participants have from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to paint their trash cans in Columbia View Park. Ready-to-paint trash cans, paint and painting supplies are provided by the ACC. Participants are also welcome to bring their own paints and supplies. Public voting will occur from 4-4:30 p.m. with winners announced at 5 p.m.
After receiving a layer of protective anti-graffiti coating, the painted trash cans will beautify City parks with one-of-a-kind art created by community members.
Business sponsorship packages are also available. The ACC is seeking $100 sponsorships in return for a business having its name and logo featured on a painted trash can. Funds raised from the competition benefit ACC projects, including art workshops for children, public murals and bike racks, and public art projects such as the Gallery Corridor Banner Project and Gateway Sculpture Projects.
The trash can painting competition is a cooperative beautification project between the ACC and St. Helens Public Works Department as part of the Summer Arts in the Parks Program.
