St. Helens Brownfields Assessment Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 25, 2019
St. Helens, Ore. – The St. Helens community is invited to attend an informational meeting about the St. Helens Brownfields Assessment Program on Wednesday, February 6 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in the St. Helens Council Chambers before the regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
This meeting will introduce the goals and objectives of the St. Helens Brownfields Program, provide education about brownfields and the risk of environmental exposure in the community, and identify opportunities to participate in redeveloping these properties for community and economic development. The meeting is intended for property owners or community members who know of a property that would benefit from professional environmental assessment.
City staff and an environmental consultant will make a brief presentation, which will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the program.
About the Brownfields Assessment Program
On May 31, 2017, the City of St. Helens was awarded a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess sites that have been contaminated by potentially hazardous substances, pollutants or other contaminants left behind due to previous development on the land. These sites are known as brownfields. The properties often remain underdeveloped and underutilized because of the barriers they face based on known or suspected contamination.
These federal resources allow the City of St. Helens to provide environmental assessments to property owners who think that the historic use of their property may have led to real or perceived contamination. The resources will fund work at no cost to the property owner to assess the presence, character, and extent of contamination and, if necessary, identify a clear path to environmental remediation through cleanup.
Anyone interested in receiving updates on the Community-Wide Assessment Program is encouraged to view the City’s Project Website (https://www.ci.st-helens.or.us/planning/page/epa-cwa-program-2017-2019, follow the City’s Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/cityofsthelens/), and subscribe to the City’s e-Newsletter (https://www.ci.st-helens.or.us/community/page/newsletters) where future meetings will be announced.
