Lateral Police Officer

The St. Helens Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Lateral Police Officer.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
General:
- Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment;
- Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid state driver's license without record of suspension or revocation in any state;
- Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories are not allowed;
- Must be able to read and write the English language;
- Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by enrollment in college vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be a Peace Officer's Standards and Training (POST) certified police officer currently employed with a law enforcement agency in any state.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment;
- Skilled in operating the tools and equipment listed in the job description;
- Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations;
- Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors;
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions;
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
- Ability to meet the special requirements listed below; and
- Ability to learn the City's geography.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to meet Department's physical fitness standards - passing the ORPAT physical agility test in five (5) minutes or less.

Terms of Employment:
- Salary: $4,599 (step 1) to $5,943 (step 6) or a possible $6,240 - 6,874 with incentives at top step
- Excellent benefits package
- Laterals may choose one of the following:
- Signing bonus of $13,000 paid out as follows:
- $3,000 upon hire
- $5,000 at 12-month anniversary from hire date and completion of probation
- $5,000 at 2-year anniversary from hire date
- Career Commitment, Residency & Longevity Reward Program (see details below)
- Helps eligible employees purchase homes within the St. Helens School District boundary
- Valued at $25,000
- Signing bonus of $13,000 paid out as follows:
- Laterals may also rollover up to 120 hours of unused vacation time (upon verification with previous employer)
- Union covered position
