Engineers Week - What's on the Horizon for the St. Helens Engineering Department?
As National Engineers Week wraps up, it’s time to look toward the future. What’s on the horizon for the St. Helens Engineering Department?
Projects in their earliest stages include replacing Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.)-compliant ramps across the city. The improvements will expand access to public areas for individuals with disabilities. Roughly eight curb ramps around the City will be replaced with improved, A.D.A.-compliant ramps. The project will also move water meters and storm drains and adjust manholes near the ramps.
The bidding process for the Campbell Park Sport Court Project was completed this week. This project will move onto its next phase in the coming weeks. Once complete, Campbell Park will be the home to new flex sports courts, improved storm drainage, and additional parking.
Behind-the-scenes, the Engineering Department is in the early stages of a 16-month update to the City’s sanitary sewer and storm drainage master plan. The plan looks at long-term growth of the city to identify projects and expansions to the City’s sanitary sewer and storm drain systems.
Storm drain improvement are also on the way. The City will safely remove existing storm drainpipe that is no longer in use. Aging waterlines will be replaced this summer, and drain improvements made from North 7th Street to North 8th Street north of Columbia Blvd. Crews will also install pipe liner in the 48-inch bypass line connected to the wastewater treatment plant’s secondary lagoon.
Soon you can expect to see Engineering’s work in action as the North Vernonia Road Sidewalk Improvement Project approaches completion by the end of April.
Engineers Week may be ending, but the work of the Engineering Department is not. St. Helens is on its way to exciting new prospects and hard-earned successes. The City wants to extend its gratitude to the Engineering Department for its part in growing and improving our city.
